Why I'm Passionate About Helping Others
Hi! I'm Jen. I'm so glad you're here. I am a huge believer in the power of story to connect people so I'd like to share mine. Maybe you can relate.
It wasn't so long ago that I felt a calling for something more.
As a first-born, people-pleasing perfectionist, I was really good at following all the rules. (Both those spoken and unspoken.)
Afraid of what others might think if they knew that I made a mistake, I preferred to stay tucked safely into my comfort zone where nothing could shake my sense of control. My self-worth came from excelling in practically every project I took on because it rarely involved risk or difficulty. Failure was never an option.
As a result, I had very high expectations for myself and everyone around me.
It was exhausting.
It was predictable.
In my late 40s, it all started to catch up with me.
I felt completely stalled and began to wonder what came next. What would the rest of my life be like? Would it always be like this, the same thing day-in and day-out? Where had 'I' gone?
My two children were almost out of college so my role as 'mom' was being redefined.
I loved my job as a teacher and achieved much success (I was named Teacher of the Year in my district my 4th year on the job), but I didn't see any room for professional growth inside the classroom.
My husband and I had been married for almost 25 years and had settled into the routine of marriage a little too well.
I wanted more from the rest of my life than just settling into more of the same old, same old.
I knew something had to change.
It was then that I discovered two things -- growth mindset and the power of my thoughts.
Growth mindset is the concept that we are always capable of growing and learning new things. Just because we've thought and believed certain things about ourselves in the past does not mean that we need to continue to do so in the future. With effort and the right attitude, anything was possible.
Growth mindset gave me hope that the days didn't need to just roll on, repeating themselves over and over. I was capable of change. I could learn a new way of thinking and doing that would better align with the person I wanted to become, not the person I was telling myself I had to be.
In my training to become a life coach, I learned even more about the power of thoughts. I learned more about the stories I told myself that I thought were the truth that held me back from becoming the best version of myself.
Why I felt the need to do everything perfectly or not at all
Why I avoided risk even at the expense of the reward
Why I thought I wasn't capable of 'more'
What I 'should' do with my life, my time, my attention, and my resources
What life could look like for me once I became an empty-nester and began the next phase of my life
I learned that the thoughts I chose to think created my feelings and led me to take (or not take) certain actions. This ultimately created the results saw in my life.
So if I wanted to create better results in my life, I needed to learn how to think more growth-focused thoughts, not the same old thoughts that got me results I already had.
In my life coach training, I learned how to get honest and real about the stories I chose to believe. I learned how to question what was true and what was something I accepted by default. I learned how to be more intentional with my thoughts so that they led me to feelings and actions that gave me the results I wanted.
It was as if the light bulb of life had finally been turned on!
Now that I've discovered how to create my best life, I want to help others do the same.
