“Life Coach” is one of those job titles that seems to be popping up more and more these days, but what exactly a Life Coach is confuses many people.
I know this first hand.
Recently, I was at a networking luncheon and when I told the others at my table that I was a life coach, I could read the confusion that was written all over their faces.
So I added, “You know those new year’s resolutions that we all set every year that include all the things we are going to do to make our lives better, only to abandon those dreams by the middle of January?”
The ladies at my table thought for few seconds as they recalled their very-important-but-now-abandoned new year's resolutions.
“Wouldn’t it be great if we could set goals to make our lives better and actually see them through?” I asked.
Their nodding heads told me I was on to something.
“I help with that.”
That’s what a Life Coach does.
What else does a Life Coach do?
A Life Coach works with clients who are goal-driven to help them reach their personal and professional goals. Mental health issues are left to the medical professionals such as therapists and psychiatrists.
A Life Coach helps you get from where you are now in life to where you want to be. She can help you figure out what matters most to you, why it matters, and how you can get it done.
A Life Coach is really great at listening and asking questions. They (generally) will not tell you what to do, but can offer resources for you to consider if you’d like to give them a try.
A Life Coach will show you your thinking. So much of what we think goes completely unnoticed because we’ve been repeating the same thoughts for so long that we no longer notice them. (Fun fact: Many of these thoughts are actually lies that we believe are the truth.)
A Life Coach is a great accountability partner! As you go forth to do the hard work of changing your life, it is natural to become discouraged. A Life Coach will keep you on track and moving forward.
A Life Coach is really great at helping you separate fact from story so that all of your decisions can be made from a solid foundation of truth.
A Life Coach is skilled at helping you get out of your own way, stop making excuses, and learn to believe in yourself. The confidence you gain will naturally spill over into all areas of your life.
